What Is UTMB®? A Guide to the Ultimate Trail Running Challenge with BUFF®

Every August, the quiet alpine town of Chamonix transforms into the heartbeat of trail running. At the center of it all? UTMB® – the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc – the most prestigious, mythical, and challenging trail running race in the world.
To understand the intensity of this event, consider this: during the inaugural UTMB® in 2003, 772 runners started, but only 67 finished. That’s a staggering 91% DNF (Did Not Finish) rate. From the very beginning, UTMB® has pushed runners to their physical and mental limits — and earned a reputation as the ultimate test of endurance.
BUFF® has been a proud supporter of UTMB® Mont-Blanc since 2007 — and many podium finishers have trusted BUFF® gear to get them through tough weather and tougher climbs. Now, our extended partnership with the UTMB® World Series brings our shared values — community, challenge, and connection to nature — to a global stage.
As part of our commitment to building a more conscious business model, the majority of BUFF® products are now designed and made in Barcelona using recycled or natural fabrics, under our sustainability program, Do More Now.
What Is UTMB®?
Created in 2003, the UTMB® (Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc) is not just a race — it’s an adventure that transcends sport. Covering 171 km with 10,000 meters of positive elevation gain, the flagship UTMB® race leads runners through France, Italy, and Switzerland, circling the iconic Mont-Blanc.
But UTMB® week in Chamonix is much more than one race. It’s a full celebration of trail running, featuring eight different events of varying length and difficulty — including the OCC, CCC, TDS, PTL, ETC, and the YCC for young runners. This week-long festival draws participants from around the world, from elite ultrarunners to first-time mountain adventurers.
Whether you finish in under 20 hours or closer to 46, the journey is the same: physically demanding, emotionally transformative, and deeply connected to the raw beauty of the Alps. Runners are united by shared trails, sleepless nights, and one common goal — crossing the finish line in Chamonix.

How to Gear Up for UTMB®- Be Ready for Anything
August weather in the Mont-Blanc area is famously unpredictable. Temperatures can soar above 30°C by day, and drop to -10°C above 2,000m at night. Runners must be prepared to face rain, wind, hail, or even snow — often in the same race.
Your gear must not only protect you in extreme conditions, but also allow you to spend one or two nights outdoors if your pace slows or if an emergency arises.
Mandatory Equipment Tips
Every UTMB® participant must carry mandatory gear at all times — from start to finish. Race stewards can perform gear checks along the course, and missing equipment can lead to penalties or disqualification.
Essential items include:
- In the basic kit: A cap, bandana or multifunctional neckwear to protect your head from the sun (we recommend our CoolNet UV® styles).
- In the hot weather kit: a Saharian-style cap that fully covers the head and neck is required. Our new Desert Cap is a must-have for this!
- In the cold weather kit: a beanie is essential. Lightweight, breathable, and easy to stow — BUFF® has you covered.
Tip: Always test your full kit during training runs in a variety of weather conditions. Your gear should feel like second nature on race day.
